ROGER HODGSON, OPEN TO A POSSIBLE SUPERTRAMP REUNION

There are stars who repudiate the repertoire that catapulted them to the stardom and they harm their audiences with unknown songs from their dark years. Songs that nobody knows, except for the die hard fans who know even the name of the beer their idols drink. Songs that get ordinary people disappointed.
And there are artists like Roger Hodgson, who knows that his place in that stardom was won by a set of pieces that were part of the history of popular music in the 20th century. He is not ashamed of those songs. On the contrary, he plays them more and more times, because there is no doubt that the people who bought their tickets want to listen to those songs.
That’s why his set list for tonight at Prat del Roure will make up a musical trip to the 70s and early 80s that will arrive in the golden years of Supertramp, a band that is a classic of symphonic rock from the last quarter of 20th century, along with Pink Floyd and Genesis.
Roger Hodgson (Portsmouth, 1950) himself talked yesterday about the basic lines of a night that surely will be set up by the greatest hits of his band: from ‘Take the long way home’, the song he usually starts his shows with, to ‘Give a little bit’, from the final encore. Between them, there will be room for ‘The logical song’, ‘Breakfast in America’, ‘Dreamer’, ‘Fool’s overture’, ‘School’ and ‘It’s raining again’. So it will be a review of the first three lustrums of Supertramp history, up to 1983, when Hodgson left the band after releasing ‘Famous last words’.
Tonight we’ll see in Escaldes a very intimate version of Hodgson: just him with a piano, a keyboard, a twelve string guitar, and the sporadic accompaniment of a saxophonist. No band, no orchestra, as he is playing with in many shows of this tour.
But he promises a very special night: “I’m happy for playing these songs. I’m very surprised because I still like them. I love them and I think they have stood the test of time because they were written with feelings. ‘Give a little bit’, for example, talks about love. Obviously, my current concept of love is very different to the concept I had thirty years ago, but nobody get tired of talking about love. Regarding their format, you’ll see how they work with just a musician. In fact, many people prefer it to the original accompaniment”.
Hodgson wants to get his product close to the new generations which, as he says, “come to my shows more and more”. And he doesn’t mind if they discovered him thanks to current bands like Goo Goo Dolls and Scooter, that lately reached the number one in the lists playing covers of ‘Give a little bit’ and ‘The logical song’. Even ‘Breakfast in America’ had the dubious privilege of being ‘rapped’ by The Gym Class Heroes. But he is very happy for that.
Since he is living on a glorious past, it’s logical that someone asked him about the possible return of Supertramp, a rumour that from time to time shakes rock planet. Hodgson doesn’t confirm it, but he doesn’t deny it: “During the last years we’ve been speaking about it, and we are open to it. Now there is nothing planned, but in the future who knows”.
The truth is that, contrary to other creative tandems, Hodgson and Rick Davies, the other creative half of Supertramp, still keep in touch… Although it is, as the first of them confessed yesterday, “because our mothers were friends and they always kept in touch”.
Hodgson didn’t want to talk of rivalry, but he fixed personal boundaries: “We wrote our own songs separately. I was more prolific than him, and sometimes I had fifty songs in my pocket, so I used to help him with his songs. But I wouldn’t talk of a rivalry between us, I’d talk of a friendly competition”.
